The City of Houston has a flat rate of $6 for taxi rides that originate and end within the Central Business District, which is the downtown Houston area bounded by I-45, I-10 and US 59. Effective July 17, 2006, the City of Houston regulated taxi meter rate is $2.50 for the first 2/11 mile, and $0.17 for each additional 1/11 mile ($4 for the first mile and $1.87 for every mile thereafter). People 60 and older receive a 10% discount on fares. Waiting is calculated on the taxi meter at $0.33 per minute ($20.00 Per Hour). There is an additional $1 surcharge on all trips which commence between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Effective July 1, 2008, every taxi trip is subject to a $1.00 fuel surcharge if gas prices are $3.50 or more per gallon, in accordance with the City of Houston ordinance.
