Yellow Cab and Taxis Fiesta Care!

The employees of Greater Houston Transportation started a mentoring program last year with the mission of assisting at-risk 8th-grade students to progress successfully into the ninth grade.

The Houston Independent School District has found in many cases eighth grade is a pivotal year. In many cases, eighth-grade students do not make it into the ninth grade. These kids are at a very difficult and impressionable age. Some have difficulties in relationships with other students; some do not see the importance of continuing their education; and, many do not have someone in their lives to address the concerns about their futures.

We chose McReynolds Middle School as our adopted school. Our mentees were identified and selected by the McReymonds’ principal and teachers.

The following Greater Houston Transportation Company employees volunteered to be mentors: Rudy Bruhns, Hector Cantu, James Carlson, Elaine Campbell, Paula Cooper, Veda Cuffee, Brenda Cunningham, Chaka Khan Fisher, Brenda Hagger, Dick Howell, Diane Jacquet, Gary Johnson, Ed Kargbo, Melinda Malek, Roman Martinez, Stuart McKenty, Mary Morgan, Cleadis Newman, Stacey Lee Roberts, Robert Rugg, James Soria, Rosario Spinoso, Barbara Volgelsang, Harding Yep, and Ericka Zamarippa.
Each employee was matched with one to two mentees, with the goal to first create a quality relationship and then to help each mentee to reach his or her

We believe we have made positive differences in each one of our mentees’ lives and look forward to serving as mentors. The mentoring program in one of the many programs and activities in which the GHTC employees participate throughout the year as a part of the Yellow Cab & Taxis Fiesta Care program.
